WHAT HAPPENED AT THE ICA?

We work on everything you can imagine, including the shoulder pads worn a young Paul Brown ( 1908-1991) when he was quarterback for the Massillon Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio ca. 1925. Brown went on to become first coach and co-founder of the original Cleveland Browns. Here associate object conservator Claire Curran is seen working on the pads. This project was a collaboration between Claire and Jane Hammond, ICA'S textile consevator. The two of them vacuumed and surface cleaned the various components. The aging leather, which had started to detiorate and powder, was consolidated and losses in the leather strips were recreated. Corrosion was removed from the metal hardware.
