Condition assessment surveys provide helpful guidelines for curators and collection managers by examining the overall environment of storage facilities and the conditions under which their objects are stored. The conservator's observations and recommendations for improvement assist in setting preservation goals and standards for maintaining the collection.

The conservator spent two days onsite with museum staff, evaluating storage methods, environment controls, housekeeping and monitoring routines, and the conditions under which their textiles are stored.  Techniques for preparing a variety of textile types for storage were demonstrated, including care and handling of the many large over-size Native American rugs in the collection. Ongoing condition documentation and the need for a disaster plan in preparation for emergency conditions were also addressed. After the inspection a written report was provided, which summarized the conservator's observations and recommended changes necessary to  achieve optimal preservation and conservation conditions.
