In 2001, Western Reserve Historical Society organized a traveling exhibition, Heavenly Visions: Shaker Gift Drawings and Gift Songs, featuring their collection of Shaker Spirit Drawings – images received as visions from God. To prepare the objects for exhibition and travel, ICA conservators assessed the collection and determined which items would require treatment before they could be safely displayed. Many of the drawings were gathered in bound volumes that required stabilization before they could be shown open.

Treatment ranged from simple humidification and flattening of distorted sheets to the removal of a fabric backing. Many of the objects required surface cleaning of the paper, both wet and dry, to remove dust, dirt and old adhesive, mending of torn edges to prevent further damage to the paper, and removal of old hinges. Following treatment, the collection was properly matted or otherwise packed for travel. Condition reports were written that traveled with the objects to each exhibition venue as a record of their condition. Recommendations were given as to appropriate light levels for exhibition, as paper and inks can be sensitive to light. The steps taken before the exhibition ensured that these objects would return safely to Cleveland for future visitors to enjoy.
