The ICA was pleased to participate in the 2010 print fair, presented by the Print Club of Cleveland. Ohio Connecting to Collections Regional Meetings
July 15, 20, 21, 26, 29, 2010
In January 2010, an IMLS-funded Connecting to Collections survey was distributed to over 800 institutions statewide responsible for preserving Ohio’s cultural heritage. This was followed by the Ohio Connecting to Collections Summit held in Dublin in May. As the project partners worked to develop an Ohio Cultural Heritage Strategic Plan, regional meetings were held around the state. The goals of the meetings were: 1) to provide the project partners with direct feedback from Ohio’s collecting institutions on future directions for preservation in the state, and 2) to offer an educational program for preservation practitioners. Presented at The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati; Athens Public Library, Athens; Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware; Bedford Historical Society, Bedford; Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green.

Working Properties of Paper and Adhesives

ICA Paper Conservator Jamye Jamison offered this practicum for artists at the ICA Conservation Center.  Topics included paper properties (general types, fillers and treatments to change properties, grain, thickness, and tensile strength) and the characteristics of both natural and synthetic adhesives.

Mammoths and Mastodons: The Conservation of Viktor Schreckengost’s Mosaics at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

ICA Objects Conservation Assistant Anne Goodwill spoke on the history of Viktor Schreckengost’s “Mammoths and Mastodons” sculpture, which identified the Pachyderm House at the Cleveland Zoo for over 50 years. The lecture was offered as part of the 2010 Cowan Pottery Symposium. Presented at the Rocky River Public Library, Rocky River, OH.

ICA staff gave two presentations at the 2010 conference. Paper Conservator Jamye Jamison was a panelist on “Conservation Connection: Building a Successful Conservation Program in a Small Museum.” Materials Research Director Mark Gottsegen offered a lecture and hands-on demonstration of “Color: Theory and Practice for Art Historians and Curators.” Presented at Cherry Valley Lodge, Newark, OH.

Ingenuity Festival

ICA conservators were among the exhibitors for the 2009 Ingenuity Festival, demonstrating the very real ways in which art and technology intersect in the labs every day.  Common investigative techniques used by conservators include infrared reflectography, x-ray radiography, and examination under infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) light sources.
