It’s Ask a Conservator Day! 🎉 Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes to preserve art and artifacts for future generations? Our conservators are here to share some of the science, care, and creativity that goes into their work.

🤔 1. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever had to conserve?

We’ve seen everything from straight jackets to hair wreaths and knee braces to painted shelf fungus! Every object has its own challenges, and that’s part of what makes conservation so fascinating — no two days (or objects) are ever the same.

🖌️ 2. What’s the difference between restoration and conservation?

Restoration focuses on making something look “whole” again, while conservation emphasizes preserving the original materials and stabilizing the object for the future. Our goal is to honor both the object’s history and its ongoing life.

🌡️ 3. What’s the most important thing people can do to protect their heirlooms at home?

Control the environment — avoid extremes of heat, humidity, and light. A little preventive care goes a long way!

🧠 4. How do you decide what treatment an object needs?

We start with close examination, research, and documentation. Then we weigh options based on what’s best for the object’s stability and intended use. Every treatment plan is as individual as the piece itself.

We’re always happy to talk about what we do and why it matters. If you have a question about conservation, collections care, or what goes on in the lab, ask away! We offer free, 30-minute consultations on Ask A Conservator Day and everyday! Email us to schedule a one-on-one appointment with a member of our expert (and very friendly!) staff.
